5. Pack It Up and Store It

How to package certain items

If you’re travelling and taking some things with you, or you need to move your belongings out over the vacation, here's how to pack like a pro.

Start with a plan

Before you begin packing, make a quick list of what you actually need to take with you.

It can help to split things into:

  • Essentials you’ll need while you’re away
  • Valuables or important items
  • Things you can leave safely in your accommodation
  • Items you no longer need and can donate or recycle

This will help you avoid overpacking and make it easier to find what you need later.

Consider storage options

If you need to move some belongings out but don’t want to take everything home, you may want to look into local storage options.

You could also speak to your flatmates about sharing storage costs if several of you need to store items.

Please remember that you must be present to meet any storage company. Staff cannot provide room access, and items cannot be left at reception for collection.

A quick internet search will bring up a list of storage companies in Exeter or there is a handy list on our website.

Label your luggage

If you’re travelling with bags, boxes or suitcases, make sure they’re clearly labelled with your name and contact details.

This is especially important if you’re flying, using a storage company, or travelling with multiple pieces of luggage.

Keep important documents with you

Keep important documents, such as ID, travel documents, academic records and financial documents, in a safe folder or bag that stays with you while you travel.

Avoid packing anything important somewhere you won’t be able to access easily.

Use suitcases for heavier items

If you’re taking books, shoes or other heavier items, pack them in a suitcase with wheels where possible. This will make them much easier to move.

Try not to overpack bags or boxes, as they may become difficult to carry or could break.

Check travel rules before you go

If you’re flying or travelling internationally, check your airline’s baggage size and weight limits before you leave.

It’s also worth checking which items are restricted or not allowed, so you don’t run into any issues at the airport.

Take photos of valuable items

If you’re taking valuable items with you, it can be useful to take a quick photo of them before you travel.

This may help if anything is lost or damaged and you need to make an insurance claim.
